Senators Markey and Luján blast FCC’s ‘partisan approval’ of Paramount-Skydance deal

Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Rating Member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Telecommunications and Media Subcommittee, launched the next assertion after the Federal Communications Fee (FCC) voted at present to approve a merger between Paramount International and Skydance Media.

“The FCC’s approval of the Paramount-Skydance merger reeks of the worst type of corruption. The timing speaks for itself: Paramount settled with Trump for $36 million on Tuesday and the FCC accredited the merger on Thursday. Whereas we’re glad that the Fee took a vote on the deal, as we’ve got repeatedly referred to as for, the partisan vote is a darkish day for unbiased journalism and a stain on the storied historical past of the Federal Communications Fee. The stench of this transaction will linger over the Fee for years.”

Senators Markey and Luján have aggressively pushed again on the Trump administration’s efforts to assault information organizations and intimidate the media. On July 18, Senator Markey wrote to Paramount International Chair Shari Redstone, demanding solutions on the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of “The Late Present with Stephen Colbert,” particularly requesting whether or not anybody within the Trump administration requested for the present to be cancelled. On July 10, Senators Markey and Luján wrote to Federal Communications Fee (FCC) Commissioner Olivia Trusty, urging the FCC to carry a full Fee vote on the Paramount and Skydance merger. In Could 2025, Senators Markey and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) wrote to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, urging the FCC to take a vote on the merger between Paramount International and Skydance Media.
