Three-level buck controllers enhance USB-C effectivity

Two voltage controllers from Renesas function a three-level buck topology for battery charging and voltage regulation in USB-C programs. With vast enter and output voltage ranges, the RAA489300 and RAA489301 are well-suited for multiport USB-PD chargers, moveable energy stations, robots, drones, and different high-efficiency DC/DC purposes.

The three-level topology provides two switches and a flying capacitor to a standard buck converter. The capacitor lowers voltage stress on the switches, enabling the usage of lower-voltage FETs with higher effectivity and decreasing conduction and switching losses. It additionally permits a smaller inductor, with ripple solely about 25% of that in a two-level design, additional slicing inductor losses.

Along with the three-level buck configuration, the controllers provide passthrough mode in each ahead and reverse instructions, enabling excessive effectivity when enter and output voltages are equal. Key parameters are programmable by way of an SMBus/I²C-compatible interface.

The units differ in voltage vary and switching frequency. The RAA489300 operates from an enter of 4.5 V to 57.6 V and an output of three V to 54.912 V, with a programmable switching frequency as much as 400 kHz (800 kHz on the switching node). The RAA489301 helps an enter of 4.5 V to 24 V and output of three V to 21 V, with a programmable frequency as much as 367 kHz (734 kHz on the switching node).

The RAA489300 and RAA489301 can be found now in 4×4 mm, 32-lead TQFN packages.
